Impeachment: What are the qualifications?

Wikipedia indicates that impeachment is often misunderstood and the constitution explains that: For the executive branch, only those who have allegedly committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors” may be impeached Now let’s look at what a recent article by Orson Scott Card said by highlighting an also recent Doonesbury cartoon:

Power corrupts… perhaps the inverse?

Interesting quote from David Brin: It is said that power corrupts, but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power. Now let’s put that in the light of what has been continually pushed by The Idealist.  He says (and quotes scripture [D&C 121:39]) that…

Intolerance: stupidity or lack of education?

Once again, just a few uneducated (or stupid) individuals can display the intolerance of an entire region or country.  In this CNN article a man was so threatened by a Muslim group purchasing neighboring land that he started pig races and served sausage. Not only did he show his intolerance, but also his lack of…

Quaran to be used to swear in congressman

Why are some people so stupid? After reading this article, I realized that all the jokes about stupid lawmakers have some validity. To summarize, Republican Rep. Virgil Goode made comments condemning the use of the Quran to swear in a newly elected Muslim congressman. He later refused to apologize, saying:

Dwight D. Eisenhower Quote

I think the Idealist would like this quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower: “I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way…

95 percent of Americans had premarital sex??

Now this is both scary and sad! The study indicates that 95 percent of American’s have had premarital sex. Now if this is actually true (I’ll explain my skepticism later), it should be a huge wake-up call to the nation. No wonder there is such a high rate of children born outside of marriage. If…

The internatianal value of the US military

In a recent article by Orson Scott Card (I know… I’m obsessed), he talks about how our civilization can fall. Not just the United States, but the international economy and in turn, society as we know it. He makes some interesting points concerning the value of the US military.

I’m coming out of the closet… I’m slightly left

Following the example of my buddy Ryan Byrd, I took the Political Compass Questionnaire and lo and behold, I’m slightly left: Economic Left/Right: -1.00 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.87 So I’m in the Authoritarian Left quadrant. But really very slightly. Although I always knew I was pretty central, I always thought I was slightly right. I’ve almost…

How true it is

I ran into this quote today, by H.L. Mencken: “Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule – and both commonly succeed, and are right.” I’m sure this was originally spoken/written in jest, but it is completely true. Where’s the centrist party…
