Shocking News: Soda makes us fat!

Chubby SodaNow, there are those who have been saying this for years, but it’s getting to the point where some might consider it a pandemic. I remember my father telling me that soda pop was just plain bad for us. I believed him for most of my childhood. Even to the point where during football , basketball (when I played) and tennis season, I never drank the stuff.

When I got a little older and realized how extremely poor we were, I figured my Dad just used “pop is bad for you” as a good excuse for not buying soda pop very often.

But a recent study indicates that soda pop has a direct correlation to the obesity of America.

The rise in soft drink consumption mirrors the national march toward obesity. At the midpoint of the 20th century, Americans drank four times as much milk as soda pop. Today, the ratio is almost completely reversed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Meanwhile, in the past 30 years the national obesity rate has more than doubled, and among teenagers, more than tripled, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Interestingly, nutritionists don’t necessarily agree on what causes the soda pop to be so fattening. Many point to the sheer amount of calories. Others point to the high amount of “high fructose corn syrup.” But all nutritionist agree that soda pops are a most likely the main contributor to the substantial increase in the obesity of American society.

So what do you think?

  1. Dave says:

Americans ingest 6.4% of their calories in the form of soft drinks and 22% of their calories in the form of drinks (juices, sports drinks, alcohol, etc.).

It’s not just the calories and sugar that are bad for you. Most contain caffeine whose adverse effects are commonly known. Also, most are carbonated, which leaches the calcium from your bones. In other words, soda pop has no redeeming value — then why do I drink it?

And I don’t think that ratio of soda to milk is because people are drinking less milk than 50 years ago, so the amount of soda has dramatically increased. To quote Jack Johnson: “we got heaps and heaps of what we sow.”

You may have seen this comparison before about Coke verses Water. It sounds like we should all be drinking more water and a lot less soda…

    WATER

    1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

    2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

    3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

    4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

    5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

    6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

    7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

    8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer

    9. If you have chronic headaches or migraines, suck down a 20oz bottle of water at the onset!!! It helps to lessen the pain (if you follow that with Gatorade or Pedialite it will help even more!!)

And now for the properties of Coke:

    1. In many states (in the USA ) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

    2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

    3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from porcelain and china.

    4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

    5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

    6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

    7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.

    8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

    9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

    For Your Info:

    1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

    2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

    3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

    Now the question is…

Would you like a Coke or a glass of water?
