Power corrupts… perhaps the inverse?

Interesting quote from David Brin:

It is said that power corrupts, but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.

Now let’s put that in the light of what has been continually pushed by The Idealist.  He says (and quotes scripture [D&C 121:39]) that (paraphrasing) anyone who acquires power will become corrupt.  I don’t really doubt this, but the scripture also indicates that it is “the nature and disposition” of man to become corrupt.  Not that all will. When we put this in a political light, we see that this concept can be and is very true with a majority (greater than 50%) of our politicians.

Now let’s throw into the mix what David Brin has said.  Not that he speaks scripture at all, but it is a profound statement.  So taking both these quotes in a political light, are all politicians corrupt?  Or can we believe that there are good people that exist in Washington?

Personally, I have to believe in the latter.

Mitt Romney in 2008?

I ran across a few articles [1] and web sites [2] that are trying to position Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate for 2008. And although they claim it’s very possible, I just am not sure someone like Romney will be able to win the Presidency.

Oracle to buy Novell?

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this.

That would make two of my former employers swallowed up by Oracle (PeopleSoft and Novell). At first glance, I didn’t like the thought of Larry Ellison having any type of influence in Happy Valley. But as I considered this more and more, I realized that it might be a really good move for Novell employees.

WardAmerica by David R. Trottier

I was cleaning out my old emails and found the following. It gave me quite the chuckle reading through it again (mostly because my family has been involved in MLM since Amway was still called Amway). So I figured I would share it with others, so here you go:

WardAmerica

by David R. Trottier

My humble plan for the financial salvation and exaltation of every soul who has the sense to sign up.

I have seen a vision. I have become a new man. And boy, am I excited! Not that I was asking for any great blessings, but when your number’s called, hey, you’ve got to go with the flow.

It all began one foggy night on the freeway. I was pondering the difficulties of my stake missionary calling and took a wrong exit. Suddenly I found myself in a dark and dreary suburb. I spotted an iron railing by the sidewalk and followed it right up to a new LDS meetinghouse. On the wall was a sign that read, “WardAmerica. Prosper in the land today!”

Lost Boys

A follow up to my last post… I just finished Lost Boys and dang. What a cool ending.

I was plesently surprised by the ending. I love plot twists and shocking revelations and this one was amazing. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it, but let me just say that you will never guess what’s going on until right at the end (when it’s revealed to you).

Orson Scott Card Books revisited

So I finished the second series on the Ender’s Game books. Ender’s Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets and Shadow of the Giant were all pretty amazing. It’s interesting to think of the difference between the first series of books vs the last four.

The first series was very sci-fi. From Ender’s Game to Children of the Mind, it was all very futuristic and packed with some very interesting and cool concepts. But the Shadow books take place on Earth for the most part and are far less sci-fi than the first series. At first, this was disappointing to me, but as I continued to read (listen), I enjoyed the world politics and military strategy. The character development was amazing as usual for Card.

Holidays are over

So, the holidays are over… another year gone by. It was good though. December seemed like a blur, especially the last two weeks. Like everyone else I know, the holiday season becomes a combination of parties (family, friends, company and church), shopping and stress. My wife gets more stressed during the holidays than at any other time. It confuses me why society (our culture) has created such chaos during the holiday season.

BYU was robbed!

I normally don’t blame the refs for a loss, but this one was ridiculous! So BYU lost to Cal 35-28. Admittedly, BYU didn’t play very well, but there were two crucial calls that were completely wrong. The two calls were even reviewed! One was even overturned by the guys upstairs.

Of course the calls I am talking about are the catch and fumble in the 3rd quarter, by Jonny Harline (this was the one that they overturned) and the touchdown catch by Cal’s Jackson, which was obviously not a catch.

I’m just a little torqued off right now!
