$112 billion for single parents

A recent study indicates that American taxpayers spend $112 billion a year on assistance to single parents and divorces.  Wow! That’s a lot of money.  Should we eliminate assistance for single mothers?  No, that would be seriously stupid.  But the assistance needs to be much better managed.  Some responsibility needs to go along with it.

The single parents need to show that they are trying to do something with their lives.  That they are taking care of their families properly.  Perhaps that their children are actually improving in school, etc.  I know this is a complicated issue, but it seems that the politicians won’t touch it with a ten foot poll because of the fear of seeming uncompassionate.

It’s time for this country (as a society) to accept responsibility.

The Fear Epidemic

Fear is the root of all evilFear is destroying our lives. There are some that say that money is the root of all evil.  If that is true, fear plays a close second fiddle. It’s crushing our society, our children and our families. It’s one of the most debilitating problems in the 21st century.

There are many who would argue that drugs, sexuality, crime, abortion and many other issues are more destructive to our society.  However, there is nothing more socially acceptable, yet so destructive as fear.  This isn’t the fear generated from horror shows, but fear of the unknown and the possibility of tragedy.

Let’s take a quick quiz.

Life After People – The History Channel

History ChannelWhile flipping through channels today, I noticed a miniseries by The History Channel called “Life After People.“  They had been running some ads over the past several weeks with an interesting line that went something like this… Welcome to Earth: Population 0.

It intrigued me and so I flipped to it. After just a few minutes into it, I realized that the show wasn’t all scientific, but was almost all political.  And it was just a human race bash.  I didn’t watch much, but the 10 minutes I did watch were rather disappointing and more to the point — disturbing.

Nobel Peace Prize goes to Al Gore???

Al GoreI subscribe to CNN’s “Breaking News” email alerts. This morning, I was “alerted” to the fact that Al Gore was just awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Can someone please explain this one to me? What does Climate Change have to do with peace? Am I misunderstanding the word “peace” or “climate change?”

Sure, the prize has always been a little controversial, but let’s look at some of the recipients of the past:

Texas Legislature voting process

Watch the full video for some interesting behavior from the Texas Legislature. It seems that if someone is absent, whoever gets to their desk first votes for them.

I wonder if this happens in the US Legislature as well?

Murphy vs Bonds — Dale takes the gloves off

Dale Murphy recently fired out at Barry Bonds for his “unknowingly” taking performance enhancing drugs.  I was shocked at the public display of, well, hatred he has toward Bonds.

“…  I’ve heard the last few weeks, that that he’s being treated unfairly. You know, life just usually isn’t like that. You don’t usually get treated unfairly. You usually get what you deserve. This is what Barry deserves. He’s a hard guy to like. He’s a hard teammate to have and, you know, he’s set a terrible example for our kids.”

And that’s from a relatively respectable source.

And he’s right!  Here’s someone who cheated (regardless of whether it was explicitly against the rules or not, the spirit of the rules were breached), and is being rewarded with a very coveted record in a major US sport… “America’s Past Time.”  And we honor him.  That’s the “American Way.”

"Fat Tax" could save 3200 lives a year

ObesityA study coming from Oxford University is proposing a 17.5% “Fat Tax” to curb demand for sugary and unhealthy foods. The researchers claim that such a steep tax would reduce demand for these products and in turn save lives… an estimated 3200 lives a year.

In addition, those who do ignore the tax will be generating additional tax dollars for local governments. Perhaps the philosophy on this is to help pay the public health care costs for afflictions cause by obesity.

Personally, I’d like to see higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. That being said, I think if you compare the numbers obesity is right up there with tobacco as a killer and cause of excessive health care costs.

Is it time we start “encouraging” those who eat too much and eat unhealthily by hitting them in the wallet?

Familiarty vs Superiority and cognitive-lockin

Windows Vista BasicA recent study from the Journal of Consumer Research and highlighted by ars technica indicates that most consumers are a little duped when it comes to judging the superiority of consumer products. Too often the average consumer is loyal to a product simply because of familiarity. That’s not all that bad, but they mistake that familiarity for superiority.

OSC's Afterword to Empire

The audio version of Orson Scott Card’s latest book, “Empire” (reviewed here) contained an afterward where a lot of what he said really hit me as just common sense. But how he phrased it needs to be heard by any and all involved in politics. From the top level “Right wing crazies” and the “Leftist Commies” to the people who barely follow the political landscape.

After I listened to the book (and afterword), I really wanted a copy of the afterword, but couldn’t find it. So I sent a request to OSC through his ornery.org site to see if I could get a hold of the text. I never heard back, but when reading the last article on his blog, I noticed a new link to the side. “Read Orson Scott Card’s afterword to Empire” — sure enough, it was posted.

Seriously, everyone should read this afterword. Here’s a small excerpt (the last three paragraphs):

Or, maybe, we can just calm down and stop thinking that our own ideas are so precious that we must never give an inch to accommodate the heartfelt beliefs of others.

How can we accomplish that? It begins by scorning the voices of extremism from the camp we are aligned with. Democrats and Republicans must renounce the screamers and haters from their own side instead of continuing to embrace them and denouncing only the screamers from the opposing camp. We must moderate ourselves instead of insisting on moderating the other guy while keeping our own fanaticism alive.

In the long run, the great mass of people who simply want to get on with their lives can shape a peaceful future. But it requires that they actively pursue moderation and reject extremism on every side, and not just on one. Because it is precisely those ordinary people, who don’t even care all that much about the issues, who will end up suffering the most from any conflict that might arise.

Now go read the rest.

Stealing from the government

A quote from Benjamin Franklin sparked my curiosity on the amount of people who feel it’s OK to “steal” from the government.

There is no kind of dishonesty into which otherwise good people more easily and frequently fall than that of defrauding the government

So I entered the following search into Google: “statistics cheating taxes”. Click the link to see the full results, but here’s a sampling:
