I recently started following a blog from a 19-yr old Entrepreneur, Ben Casnocha. A recent post struck me as quite insightful. Ben outlines 8 things that you need to teach your kids that they most likely are not learning in high school. These are things that not only help them in higher education, but also in the business world. Some might seem a little odd or against the norm, but after some careful consideration, you see the reasoning.

"Fat Tax" could save 3200 lives a year
A study coming from Oxford University is proposing a 17.5% “Fat Tax” to curb demand for sugary and unhealthy foods. The researchers claim that such a steep tax would reduce demand for these products and in turn save lives… an estimated 3200 lives a year.
In addition, those who do ignore the tax will be generating additional tax dollars for local governments. Perhaps the philosophy on this is to help pay the public health care costs for afflictions cause by obesity.
Personally, I’d like to see higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. That being said, I think if you compare the numbers obesity is right up there with tobacco as a killer and cause of excessive health care costs.
Is it time we start “encouraging” those who eat too much and eat unhealthily by hitting them in the wallet?
Familiarty vs Superiority and cognitive-lockin
A recent study from the Journal of Consumer Research and highlighted by ars technica indicates that most consumers are a little duped when it comes to judging the superiority of consumer products. Too often the average consumer is loyal to a product simply because of familiarity. That’s not all that bad, but they mistake that familiarity for superiority.
It's iPhone Enabled!
RamblingEngineer.com is now iPhone enabled!
What does that mean? Well, that means when I visit the site on my new iPhone (yes, I gave in to the Apple seduction), the site appears in a nice iPhone friendly style. No sidebar or bulky navigation. A simple and clean interface.
But that doesn’t mean that the rest of you without iPhones will be affected. In fact, you won’t see a difference. The iPhone style/layout will only show up through the iPhone. For those technically minded, it means that it looks for a specific “user-agent.”
I’ll post a review of the iPhone in the near future.
Blog focus
It’s been a while since I last blogged. But I haven’t forgotten about it. I have no fewer than 7 blogs article queued up. I just haven’t had time to completely flush out each of the entries.
I’ve been busy at work with a high priority project as well as some family issues. I’m still trying to determine what the focus of my blog should be. So bear with me during my time of silence.
