DARPA is Big Brother — Ultimate Language Translation

DARPA is Big Brother — Ultimate Language Translation

Apparently DARPA is working on a pretty amazing project.

If something like this gets to be fairly accurate, then what will our world become. I read (and reviewed) the book, “1984” by George Orwell. This technology could easily make a reality of what Orwell portrayed. The ability to translate on the fly is amazing technology and could be incredibly handy.

But if systems exist to analyze speech and sound to this extent and with near 100% accuracy, then it would be easy to convert that technology into something more Big Brother-ish. With the ability to analyze speech to the extent required to do translation, the ability to recognize keywords/phrases/etc that are against the ruling party would be a piece of cake.

The technologist in me loves the thought of having that kind of technology available to the people, but in the wrong hands, it could be quite dangerous.

Just thinking out loud.

Interesting, but I can’t seem to find your review on 1984. See if you can get to it.

Just click the link…. “reviewed” is a link that will take you directly to it.

    Dan,

I tried that three times without success.

Interesting… for some reason, I had it marked as private. Dunno how that happened, but you should be able to view it now. I was wondering why you hadn’t made any comments about that posting 😉
